Jeff Layton, the owner of LaytonScape, was raised as a city boy, but he’s always had the heart of a country boy. A Salt Lake City native, Layton’s childhood consisted of school, church, delivering newspapers, bike riding, hiking, and skiing. On the weekends, however, he released his inner country boy and tended to his grandparents’ farm.
Layton cherishes many fond childhood memories, which include helping his grandparents with chores, going on joyrides on their tractor, racing small stick boats on the irrigation ditch, and engaging in mud pie-throwing fights with his brother.
His favorite memory, however, is helping his father plant seven acres of trees on the family farm. Layton developed an appreciation for working with the earth because of his hands-on labor and his family’s work ethic.
The Vision
Layton commemorates his father by taking on his dream of nourishing and selling trees. His ultimate goal was to pick up his father’s dream so that he could attend college, so he pruned and watered his trees until they were ready to sell. Layton hand-painted a sign that said, “trees for sale,” and proudly displayed it in his city’s main street; a landscaping entrepreneur was born.
Through his tree selling business, Layton earned enough money to attend a private college, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Business. After he graduated, he faced a difficult question: business or landscaping? Layton combined the two and founded LaytonScape.
